SEARCH is a band known to be one of the forerunners of rock music in the Malaysian mainstream music industry since the 1980s. Since its formation in 1981, the band has released more than 25 top-selling albums, a plethora of songs constantly played on the radio, and series of sold-out concerts throughout their three decades in the Malaysian music industry, making them one of Malaysia’s outstanding rock bands.
SEARCH signed their first recording contract with Polygram Records in Singapore in the mid 1980s. Their first three studio albums, Cinta Buatan Malaysia (1985), Langit dan Bumi (1986) and Mentari Merah di Ufuk Timur were recorded at Lion Studio, Singapore, with M. Nasir as producer. With these albums, they began to attract the attention of the Malaysian music fans.
Their live performance as a famous band took place at the Battle of the Bands Concert in Kuala Lumpur, on 2 February 1986, where they took the stage as guest artists. This was followed by their inaugural concert, Konsert Terbuka Search at Panggung Anniversari, Kuala Lumpur, in the same year.
Search was also featured in Nasir Jani’s documentary film Kembara Seniman Jalanan in 1986. Their first major award as a band was the Penyanyi Berkumpulan Popular award at the Anugerah Pelakon/Penyanyi Popular Berita Harian in 1987.
The albums Cinta Buatan Malaysia, Langit dan Bumi, and Mentari Merah di Ufuk Timur sold 20,000, 30,0000 and 50,000 units respectively, awarding their record label Gold Records for the first two albums and a Platinum Record for the third album.
Throughout 1988, they played five concerts all over Malaysia, with each concert featuring a supporting band, Gersang (Kota Bahru, 5 April; Kuala Lumpur 9 April); and Mega (Johore Bahru, 7 and 8 October; Kluang, 10 October; Stadium Negara, 3 December), followed by their first show outside of Malaysia with two Thai bands in Bangkok, on the eve of new year 1999.
After leaving Polygram, Search signed with Pacific Records (later known as BMG Pacific) as their distributor label and formed their own recording label, Go-Search Sdn Bhd (in which they will record all their albums throughout the 1990s). They recorded their first hit album under G0-Search’s banner, Fenomena, which was released in 1989. This album was also their first studio album to be released in the compact disc format after it was initially released on cassette. Their evergreen hit, “Isabella” was from this album. Fenomena went on to sell more than 220,000 units in Malaysia and more than 600,000 units in Indonesia.
Throughout 1989, they became more active in playing live, including the Konsert Isabella tour held in Kota Bahru, Alor Star and Kuala Lumpur in the middle of the year, and subsequently continued in 1990 in Kuantan and Jakarta, Indonesia.
Search raised the curtains of the 1990s by releasing their next album Karisma. This album sold more than 150,000 units in Malaysia and 200,000 units in Indonesia. Once again, they found themselves in two feature films, the musical Fenomena and the romance drama Isabella, which was inspired by their hit song by the same name. Both of this films featured Amy as the lead role. Throughout the 1990s as well, Search alongside Ella and Wings toured the nation in a series of concerts, and continued to play in Kuantan and Jakarta as they did before. Not long after Karisma was released, Nasir Daud left the band to form his own production company, Dangooroos.
In 1991, Search celebrated their 10th anniversary by releasing a compilation album entitled Sepuluh Tahun which featured 8 of their previous hit songs and two previously unreleased songs. In the same year, they managed to spread their popularity across continents to perform at the New Music Nights Festival held at the Cat Club, New York City, United States in July, before returning back home for the Karisma Konsert in Stadium Negara, Kuala Lumpur a month later.
In 1992, it was Search’s turn to produce their own album. With M. Nasir acting as production consultant, they produced their next album, Rampage. The release of this album was followed by Konsert Rampage at the Tapak Pesta Sungai Nibong, Penang in November. In the same year, they collaborated with Wings to release the Double Trouble album, and the two bands went on a series of “Double Trouble” concert tour in seven venues across the Malaysian Peninsula.
In 1995, Nasir Daud returned to record the album Gema di Timur Jauh and the band played two concerts in Shah Alam (9 June) and Kuala Lumpur (18 October) in conjuction with the album release. The Kuala Lumpur show was recorded and released as a live album entitled Gema di Timur Jauh Unplugged (which featured different versions of the songs from the original Gema album). This first unplugged album by Search sold more than 100,000 units.
Search released another album in 1996, Rock ‘N’ Roll Pie, to commemorate their 15th anniversary, this time featuring the works of local and international songwriters (including Klaus Meine from Germany’s Scorpions). The next year, the band played the Konsert Rock ‘N’ Roll Pie in Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, which was recorded for a TV3 broadcast and a live album release.
In 1998, soon after Fauzi came in to replace Nasir Daud who left the band for the second time, Search once again collaborated with Wings (at the time led by singer Mustaffa Din) to produce the Double Trouble 2 album to be released in 1998. However, that year proved to the hardest for the band when singer Amy decided to leave the band to concentrate on his solo career.
To complete their Bikin Wilayah album, the band invited Awie as guest singer and credited his name on the cover sleeve of the album, released in late 1998. However, the band proved to be on the verge of a break up when Kid, Noordin and Fauzi left the band, leaving Yazid as the only original member of Search. In 1999, singer Moq and guitarist Shah was brought in to complete Selepas Banjir, the last album to feature new songs by Search, before the band officially announced their disbandment on 16 January 2001 during the launch of the Rockestra compilation album.
Eventhough the band was non-active in the first ten years of the 21st century, compilation albums bearing the Search name continued to be released, filled with selected hit songs of the band, not forgetting the rerelease of Fenomena and Gema di Timur Jauh in digital restoration formats. Yazid, Moq and Sham continued to rock on by forming Rampage, while Amy worked on his solo career which spanned three albums under the Sony label (later known as Sony BMG): Aku, Suatu Masa and IKON: A Rockstar Chronicle.
After several years of being apart, Search was ressurected with a reunion concert in Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur in February 2004. This concert was recorded to be released as the live album Konsert Rock Search Evolusi 2004, released three years later. In the same year, Search opened for Scorpions in Kuala Lumpur as part of the latter’s Southeast Asia Unbreakable Tour.
In early 2006, the media confirmed that Amy, Nasir Daud, Hillary Ang and Yazid Ahmad have reunited to record a new album, as well as introducing their official website, Dunia Search. Amy reported that their website received 200,000 visitors in the first week. Their first single after seven years of silence, Ying dan Yang, which was made available by downloading from the website, was taken from their Empire Garden EP. However, due to technical problems, the EP was not released after all. Simultaneously, they recorded another album, Gothik Malam Edan, which was succesfully released in mid 2006, this time under the Life Records distribution label and Neo Digital Sdn Bhd recording label.
In the same year, Search announced their S2 Celebration concert to commemorate their 25th anniversary, along with the Indonesian band Slank, to be scheduled on 4 January 2007 at the Stadium Merdeka. However, Search pulled out at the last minute, allegedly out of respect towards the victims of the flood disaster in Kota Tinggi, Johore a month prior. Slank went on with the concert, supported by Spider and Wings.
In 2009, Search went on a nationwide tour called Konsert Penghargaan Search di Awan Biru which was held in 11 venues around the country, including 3 shows in East Malaysia.
Search then toured Europe with shows in Ireland and the United Kingdom on 12 to 23 February, supported by the up and coming band Hujan. They performed at Button Factory, Dublin, on 16 February, King’s Cross, London (18 February); and Cavern Club, Liverpool (21 February).
The following month, Amy starred in a musical theatre entitled Suatu Masa: Amy which was “not in the form of rock” at the Istana Budaya from 26 to 28 March. The musical was organized by Mentari Channel Network and each staging was in 45 minutes with accompanying music by the National Symphonic Orchestra, with emotional monologue characteristics.
On May 1st, 2010, Search once again collaborated with Wings for another “Double Trouble” concert, this time to reminisce on the success of the first “Double Trouble” concert back in 1993. This time around, it was held at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort and was reported to be attended by 20,000 fans. This was followed by another concert in Stadium Larkin, Johore Bahru, this time renamed as “Konsert DT” and was reported to be attended by 12,000 fans. The name was changed again to “Konsert Gemuruh DT” when the bands took the stage at Seberang Jaya on 18 December and at the final show in Sunway Lagoon on 25 December 2010.
