Barack Obama Win Election Presiden USA

ST. PAUL, Minnesota: Barack Obama, who four years ago was a virtual political unknown, is set to venture where no black American has gone before: into a presidential election as the candidate of a major party.

In a 17-month primary campaign full of bitter invective, the one-term Illinois senator has emerged battered, bruised but standing triumphant after downing the never-say-die challenge of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

The 46-year-old senator from Chicago has done it by allying an electrifying oratory to a fearsome grassroots organization that, against all odds, defeated the Democratic royalty of the Clinton family in delegates and fundraising.

“Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Obama was to tell crowds Tuesday at a victory rally here, according to remarks released by his campaign.

“Tonight we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another — a journey that will bring a new and better day to America,” Obama vowed as US media said he had clinched the party’s nomination by securing the 2,118 delegates needed.

“America, this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past,” the Illinois senator pledged.

Obama has ignited US politics with his promise of reconciliation, betting that a nation hungry for change will overlook his relative inexperience after eight years of rancor under President George W. Bush.

But after seeing off the vaunted Clinton machine, the Democrat will have to find still greater steel to overcome Senator John McCain and the no-holds-barred politics of the Republican Party in November’s election.

And Obama’s defeats by Clinton in rust-belt states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and West Virginia shows he has yet to connect with large numbers of working-class, white voters.

The whispered question is whether that was down to racism, or down to voters’ preference for the more down-to-earth image of Clinton compared to what she claimed was Obama’s “elitism.”

He did not help his cause by saying blue-collar voters cling to guns and religion — two electric issues in US politics that candidates highlight at their peril — because they are “bitter” about their fate.

In a bid to close the gap, he tried his hand (disastrously) at bowling, eating calorific cheese steaks and reminding supporters at rallies that he’s just an ordinary guy from a broken home.

The irony is that compared to the former first lady and to McCain, the son and grandson of navy admirals, Obama has had to overcome challenges that, in another age, would have crippled a presidential aspirant.

Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961 to a black Kenyan father and white mother from Kansas. His parents’ mixed-race marriage, at that time, was still illegal in many of the mainland US states.

His father abandoned the family when “Barry” Obama was just two and his mother Ann, a budding anthropologist, resorted to government food handouts at one point to feed her young child.

She took her son with his new stepfather to Indonesia where he attended a local Islamic school — a point seized on by right-wing agitators to portray Obama as a secret Muslim when in fact, as controversy over his former Chicago church has shown, he is a practising Christian.

With Ann pursuing her studies, Obama returned to live with his grandparents in Hawaii in his teens. He attended Columbia University in New York, dabbling in soft drugs, according to his own best-selling books.

Obama then went to the elite Harvard Law School, where he was the first black American to be president of the influential Harvard Law Review, before turning down lucrative job offers to work as a community organizer in Chicago.

Married in 1992 to Michelle, a fellow lawyer, Obama began his rise through the bare-knuckle world of Chicago politics. One of his early patrons was Antoin “Tony” Rezko, a property developer now on trial for corruption.

Obama burst into national consciousness with a barnstorming speech at the the 2004 Democratic convention, with a message of unity that propelled him to the US Senate in the November 2004 elections.

He kicked off his audacious presidential bid in February 2007, on the steps of the same Old State Capitol in Illinois where civil war president Abraham Lincoln called on a “house divided” to stand together or collapse.

In the words of former New York governor Mario Cuomo, politicians “campaign in poetry but have to govern in prose.”

Obama has shown the poetry. Whether he gets to write the prose now depends on McCain, the voters, and his tryst with destiny on November 4. AFP

Scorpio Romantic Profile

Ruling the House of Sex can either be a blessing or a curse, and a lot depends on how the wily Scorpion deals with this erotic burden. Those mystical and magical creatures born under the sign of Scorpio are quick to channel their raw energy, power and strength into an exploration of their lover’s emotions and sexuality. The Scorpion is intuitive and wants to get to the bottom of things, so there’s no keeping secrets from this sexy Sign (although they’ll surely keep a few of their own).

An alluring resourcefulness and self-confidence is also evident in Scorpios, these folks being keenly attuned to what’s best for them and how to get it. Anyone willing to take on the Scorpion will be engaging a cosmic power with plentiful sexual urges. The good news? A caring and devoted lover awaits. On the flip side, don’t cross them, because those stingers can leave a heck of a welt.
