HP Enables Consumers to Simply Touch, Print and Go with Industry’s First Line-Up of Touch-Enabled Printers. Breakthrough user interface leads industry in taking touch technology mainstream, making everyday printing more intuitive and effortless

HP today unveiled the industry’s first consumer line-up of touch-enabled HP Photosmart printers enabled by its new, breakthrough TouchSmart user interface. HP’s new dynamic intuitive touchscreen technology makes it easier than ever for consumers to conveniently display, edit and print photos as well as copy, scan and print documents. The groundbreaking HP Photosmart All-in-One printers with TouchSmart technology further HP’s print leadership and commitment to innovation in the consumer segment.
The expanded Photosmart portfolio also features one-touch wireless set-up(1) and wireless printing with a sleek new piano black design, and up to 30 percent reduced energy consumption compared to previous models(2) – in addition to its new user-friendly TouchSmart printing interface. HP designed the new Photosmart line-up to better meet the needs of growing consumer demand for touch technology in their devices. Market research firm Gartner projects that the capacitive touchscreen and touch-button controller segment will continue to explode, hitting 1.3 billion units by 2012, a 44 percent compounded annual growth rate.(3)
“Since HP introduced its first consumer touchscreen printer in 2006, our R&D teams have drawn from extensive customer insights, as well as leading-edge touchscreen technology to develop a new TouchSmart user interface that is familiar and natural to use, that will make everyday printing easy and enjoyable,” said P.V. Viswanath, Country General Manager, Imaging and Printing Group, HP Malaysia. “More importantly, we will be leading the industry in making Touchsmart technology available on our full line-up of new HP Photosmart printers.”
In addition to the touch-enabled Photosmart line-up, HP today also bolstered its expansive consumer printing and personal publishing portfolio with three HP Deskjet printers including HP’s most affordable wireless offering(4) – the HP Deskjet D5560 Printer.
Photosmart Portfolio Designed for Performance, Powered by TouchSmart
The signature innovation consistent across HP’s new line-up of TouchSmart-enabled HP Photosmart All-in-One printers is called the “Magic Frame.” This patented touch-enabled panel provides consistency, value, and ease-of-use across the portfolio. With the touch of a finger, the screen maximizes the size of the touch area by including contextual buttons that light up only when relevant to the user. To simplify the user experience, HP removed all clutter from the touch panels, minimized unnecessary features – maximizing the TouchSmart area available to display, edit and access photos.
From a design perspective, the sleek, piano black finish and graphical accents on the Photosmart printers’ exterior and touch displays complement its most recent PC and notebook lines – taking seamless connectivity one step further.
The touch-enabled HP Photosmart portfolio includes the following new print, copy and scan solutions:
The HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One Printer offers the easiest wireless set-up – simply touch one button for the freedom to print from virtually anywhere in the home.(1) The 1.45-inch color display and HP TouchSmart frame make it easy to produce lab quality photos, everyday documents, copies and photo reprints.
The HP Photosmart C4680 All-in-One Printer also features a 1.45-inch color display and HP TouchSmart frame for simplicity and convenience. Built for efficiency, it also includes several features for “goof proof” printing such as the HP Photo Print Gadget – which allows users to simply drag and drop photos to a desktop icon from virtually anywhere on a PC – saving time and reducing errors.(5)
HP’s Evolution of Touch-Enabled Printing
The power of touch is not new to HP, but has evolved significantly since HP first incorporated touch into the Photosmart line in 2006. The new touch experience is far more user friendly and intuitive, and features dynamic graphical interfaces that improve the overall experience and making printing directly from the printer far more instinctive than before.
Through HP’s unparalleled research and development efforts, and as well as a thorough understanding of the audience and their needs, the company has been able to make the touch-based processes on the new Photosmart line more familiar and natural – and ultimately more satisfying. For HP, this means intuitive multi-touch capable systems and software that react to the lightest touch of a finger.
Today HP has more touch screen printers than any other brand(6) and this is just the beginning.
“Touch technology will play an important role in making the future of printing more intuitive and simple. Incorporating touch into HP’s devices is a big step forward in adapting technology to better fit into people’s lives, so they don’t have to adapt to technology,” said Steve Breidenbach, Ph.D., Imaging and Printing Group Experience Design Master, HP. “In the current Photosmart line-up, we continued to innovate by making the TouchSmart interface simple and natural to use, and we have even made the entire printing experience more compelling by offering warm colors, photo realistic graphics and quality sounds.”
