Malaysia’s leading integrated communications service provider, Maxis Berhad (Maxis), today organised its Hari Raya Aidilfitri Charity Open House at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Attended by residents from various charity homes including Pusat Dalam Komuniti (PDK) Kampung Kenanga, Pusat Jagaan Nur Hikmah, Rumah Jagaan dan Rawatan Orang Tua Al-Ikhlas, Pusat Jagaan Kanak-Kanak Kurang Upaya Kirtarsh and Rumah Victory, the open house was held to spread the joy of Raya and deepen relationships with the community. The event was attended by Maxis’ Chief Executive Officer, Sandip Das and his spouse, Purnima Das, members of Maxis’ senior management and staff.
A total of 125 residents from the five homes were treated to a spread of traditional Malay delicacies and festive song presentations. Sandip, Purnima as well as Maxis senior management members and the volunteers also spent time entertaining the special guests. To add to the festive cheer, the residents later received ‘Duit Raya’ of RM50 each. Meanwhile, the homes were delighted to take home RM10,000 each as part of Maxis’ contribution.
“It brings us a lot of pleasure to be hosting our annual Hari Raya Charity Open House yet again. This is a time of the year where we always look forward to sharing the joy of the festive season, especially with our special friends from the charity homes. It also gives us an opportunity to strengthen our relationships and ties with the community, as well as contribute to their well-being,” said Sandip.
As part of its initiatives to support the needs of the community, Maxis introduced two new community programmes this year. The Company organised its first ever Caregivers’ Appreciation event earlier in the day. “For the first time, we are thrilled to celebrate the “unsung heroes” of charity homes in recognition of their unwavering dedication and hard work. It takes a special group of people to be able to devote their time in caring for the community.” added Sandip.
Maxis played host to over 50 leaders, administrators and caregivers from more than 20 homes at the event, and presented them with a mobile device each, Hotlink starter-packs and top-up tickets to support their communication needs and as a token of appreciation.
“We are humbled that these individuals have dedicated their lives for the betterment of society, and we wanted to show our sincere appreciation to them. To us, their tireless efforts demonstrate how the spirit of giving can transform lives. Beyond providing donations, we strongly believe in driving Corporate Responsibility initiatives that enrich the lives of all Malaysians and we remain committed to assisting the community and their caregivers in meaningful ways,” added Sandip.
Another CR initiative as part of Maxis’ community development drive this year is the Home Adoption Programme. Under the programme, Maxis has pledged its support to two charity homes, the Independent Living & Training Centre (ILTC), a centre for people with disabilities run by people with disabilities, and the Jenjarom Old Folks Home. Maxis will provide cash contributions and organise engagement activities and relevant training for a period of one year.
Over the years, Maxis has demonstrated its commitment to programmes which contribute to the community and support the country’s aspirations in the areas of technology, education and youth development. In harnessing leading-edge technology and innovation to create value and to bridge the digital divide, Maxis’ Cyberkids, the Company’s flagship community programme, has provided ICT training to more than 8,500 students and teachers from 1,500 schools nationwide. The Cyberkids initiative is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year and Maxis is looking to extend the programme to a new segment, that is, schools for special needs children.
Maxis is also doing its part in developing the country’s human capital and nurturing local talent by providing scholarships for education to deserving Malaysians enabling them to realise their dreams at leading universities globally and abroad. In addition, Maxis is the only telco in Malaysia to provide scholarships to its postpaid customers.
Maxis previously received the Best CSR award at the PC.com Awards Night 2011 and the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award 2012 in the Social Empowerment Category, in recognition for its initiatives towards enriching the lives of local communities through its various CR programmes as well as its efforts in many other social causes.
