About KAMI THE MOVIE
Popular TV series “KAMI” continues its journey onto the silver screen during this Raya holidays.
Presented by Grand Brilliance and produced by Red Films, “KAMI” is the feature film directorial debut of Effendee Mazlan and Fariza Azlina Isahak; who decided to tell the story of five young teenagers on the road to self-discovery. A concept which has a large appeal to teens today, ”KAMI” uses music from local indie bands as the local gig scene sets the backdrop for the film.
Consistent with Red Films’ approach and interest in producing fresh stories for the local audience, the issues and elements tackled in this film is not the usual mainstream drama, and in line with Grand Brilliance’s aim to raise the standards of the local film industry. A production such as ”KAMI” has paved the way for a new generation of filmmakers and hopefully its uniqe style of story telling will have an impact on the local audience.
General Manager for Grand Brilliance, Ahmad Puad Onah said that he recognizes the popularity of the series to be one of the main strengths of ”KAMI”. Such a strong fan base would increase the expectations for the film – will the fans be satisfied?
”Such a high expectation is placed on directors, Effendee Mazlan and Fariza Azlina” Ahmad Puad said during his speech at the ”KAMI” media launch yesterday which was attended by more than 300 guests, including the cast and local filmmakers.
Executive Producer of Red Films and “KAMI”, Lina Tan said “KAMI” is a film that tells a story of friendship among five teen friends with challenges and issues that affect them which are relevant to the film’s target audience. We are confident the audience will be able to relate to the story and characters and enjoy the music by local independent bands such as Meet Uncle Hussein, Laila’s Lounge, Hujan and more”.
“KAMI” maintains its cast of Liyana Jasmay as Lynn, Syarul Ezani (Ali), Nas-T (Abu), Juliana Evans (Sofie) , Zayanah Ibrahim (Adii) and Zahiril Adzim as Boy. The film continues from where the series left of, with the characters finishing up their SPM examinations. Unknown to the rest, Lynn and her mother had moved from their small town home to start afresh in the city away from a persistent small-time drug dealer, Boy, whom Lynn used to run errands to gain extra pocket money.
To complicate matters, Lynn writes under the pseudonym Teka Teki for her own, well known fanzine called KAMI and has recently contributed a scathing write-up on Ali’s band in a local music magazine. As she struggles to keep her secrets under wraps, Lynn soon learns that they are all hiding something from each other.
“KAMI” begins with Abu’s escape from a home for juvenile delinquents and his reunion with Ali to celebrate the girls’ final paper and the last day of SPM exams marking the end of high school and the beginning of their journey to taking their first steps in making life altering decisions. Soon their freewheeling post-SPM break is interrupted when Lynn’s old life catches up with her new life and the two worlds collide, setting off a chain of events that will force all of them to face their personal demons, changing their lives forever.
Ahmad Puad Onah commented during his speech that ”KAMI” was produced within a budget of less than RM1 million. A modest budget which Red Films and Directors had to work with following the success of the brand KAMI. He said ” Even though it was not the usual budget you would get compared to mainstream films, we did not compromise with quality”
” I think that it’s not too much to say that this film has the ingredients to become not only an interesting piece based on its story telling , but is capable of capturing an audience and bringing in returns, especially since it will be screening during the Raya holidays. ” he explained.
In line with the ”KAMI” promotions, a nationwide gig tour sponsored by Hotlink, with performances from Meet Uncle Hussain, Laila’s Lounge, Bittersweet, OAG and Couple commenced since June.
”KAMI” will open in cinemas on the first day of Raya.
